Inspired by a viewing of Pearl Jam Twenty I’ve decided to go back and listen to all the Pearl Jam studio albums in order of release.
No Code
Oh this album. I am certain there are Pearl Jam die hards who rep this thing hard but man it is not so good. Would I be wrong in saying these sound like campfire songs? “Who You Are” has an easy gait and chant along lyrics but is also pretty lame. The rockers here (“Habit”, “Hail Hail”) feel like concessions. This is the sound of a band getting rid of their fanbase the only way they know how. Letting Stone Gossard sing a song doesn’t help either. Eddie Vedder says as much in the documentary, that he didn’t think that Pearl Jam had earned their fame. The only problem is that the self titled record and Backspacer blatantly pander to that old fanbase. You don’t know what you’ve got till it’s gone.

Vitalogy
I thought it happened later but I guess Vitalogy is when Pearl Jam decided to not rock so hard. “Daughter” is clearly the blueprint they decided to emulate, not “Animal”. Oh well. This is a good album all told. “Tremor Christ”, “Whipping”, and “Corduroy” are wonderful. I’m over disliking “Better Man” but “Nothingman” is still a slog. And I don’t think anyone has ever explained “Bugs”.
Simon earlier tonight, as I tried to edit the podcast. He has no boundaries.
