I’m up late trying to finish the ordering of my Best Albums of the Decade list, which I have been lazily ordering, reordering, and reordering again since October. Everyone has posted theirs and then some, and I’m still dicking around. Sorry. I’m glad Stylus came back and posted a list, so I’m not the last guy but I need to get moving. Right now I’m listening to Amnesiac and it is working me over. Most underrated Radiohead album? Just might be.

#11 “If We Don’t Make It, We’ll Fake It” by Death From Above

I saw Death From Above two nights in a row and was completely blown away by each time (it was a pretty killer line up, too: Blood Brothers/Pretty Girls Make Graves/Red Light Sting/Cinema Eye at the Troubadour & the Glasshouse). They were just loud and arrogant, but powerful. I quickly picked up their “Heads Up” EP and I want to believe I worn the thing out. Then came the “Romantic Rights” EP and finally, the epic “You’re A Woman, I’m A Machine” album. They were such a perfect band. Why did they have to break up? Who told Jesse F. Keeler that he would better serve the world making shitty dance records with Steve Aoki instead of bong rattling bass lines and writing tunes about pulling out? That may be the greatest musical injustice of the 2000s: the premature break up of Death From Above. What a shame!

And for those who’ve been keeping score, this song served as the inspiration of the second title/header of the original blog during its hey day.

While it is a shame that Death From Above never followed up You’re A Woman, I’m A Machine, their legacy is pure and untouched. No mediocre follow up, just this unimpeachable greatness. Really, most bands should break up before releasing their blah records. Imagine if The Strokes had broken up before First Impressions. Imagine how happy we’d all be.

The Stills will never take over the world, but this record kinda kills. It can be a bit maudlin, and I remember telling my parents(of all people) that I thought it was overrated when it came out(I’m certain they had no idea what I was talking about and just glad that their money for college was being well spent) and now it stands out as a strong post Interpol pre-indie-bullshit record. The Stills have since released two albums with different lineups and songs not nearly as tight or memorable. So it is.

This one is getting linked all over the place, and rightly so. Dargis is a firebrand here, and I think her comments about Wes Anderson are on point. Though I’ve heard nothing but great things about Fantastic Mr. Fox, after his last two shitballs I would have been hard pressed to give Anderson any money for anything. Even laundry.
